At Girl Scouts, STEM is nothing new! We’ve been practicing STEM skills as one of our four programming pillars for over 113 years!

With our new AEP Foundation STEM Leadership Center and Nationwide Foundation Environmental Center, the STEM experiences and opportunities are endless for our Girl Scouts and the community! From our main STEM Program Series’ to our STEM partner programs and more, we’ve got a STEM experience to match any interest, skill or age level.

Tree Tappers Maple Syrup Festival toggle arrow

Did you know that Girl Scouts of Ohio’s Heartlands’ Camp Ken Jockety is home to its very own sugarbush? Camp Ken Jockety is home to over 400 maple trees! Our staff works tirelessly throughout the year to maintain and harvest sap so you can enjoy our locally-made maple syrup. Our syrup-making starts in January when we begin tapping our maple trees. When the weather is just right, we collect the sap and drive it to our sugarshed. There, the sap is processed into syrup by heating it to evaporate the excess liquid. From January to March, girls and their families are able to help us tap trees, hike through our sugarbush, and celebrate at our Tree Tappers Maple Syrup Festival. You can even pick up materials to tap maple trees of your own!

Pollinator Palooza toggle arrow

What do butterflies, bees, bats, and hummingbirds all have in common? They are all pollinators who need our help! During this program, you'll learn what pollinators are, why they are so important, and what we can do to help protect them. You'll assemble a bee hotel, plant a starter pollinator garden with plants that can help pollinators thrive, make a pollinator-inspired craft, and learn about ways you and your family can help protect pollinators!

The GSOH STEM Challenge toggle arrow

In this first of its kind program, Girl Scouts are invited to create a team and compete in the GSOH STEM Challenge! In the morning, Girl Scouts will learn new STEM and trade skills from industry professionals through hands-on instruction. Then, after a delicious lunch, Girl Scouts will be given a community problem to solve using their new and existing STEM skills. GSOH will be providing materials and resources for Girl Scouts to put together a prototype and display that represents their solution. Girl Scouts will be judged on their presentation and awards will be handed out at the end of the day. Do you think you have what it takes to step up to the STEM Challenge?

Wetlands Days toggle arrow

Come celebrate our wetlands ecosystem at camp! We will be practicing our citizen science skills, learning about animal habitats, and making a fun campfire snack. Daisies will earn their Animal Observer badge, Brownies will earn their Eco Friend badge, and Juniors will earn their Animal Habitats badge.

Secrets of Soil toggle arrow

Soil holds many wonders! Join us at the Nationwide Foundation Environmental Center at Camp Ken-Jockety to unlock all of the secrets soil holds. Examine soil with soil testing equipment, learn about the importance of dirt and all the critters that call it home, and build a terrarium to keep. After this program, your Girl Scout will be a dirt expert!

Citizen Science Journey Day toggle arrow

Have you ever wanted to be a scientist? Well now is your chance! In this new program you'll get to come to camp and learn about what it takes to be a citizen scientist. Learn about how professionals test water quality in the Darby Creek, use water probes to monitor creek health, and practice different ways that scientists observe the environment.
