Community Outreach

Each year, Girl Scouts of Ohio’s Heartland Council serves girls through community outreach programs for girls K-8. These programs provide a Girl Scout experience to girls in areas underserved and underrepresented by the traditional troop experience. Community outreach programs are delivered in schools, community centers, faith-based institutions, youth organizations and camps to introduce the Girl Scout experience in a familiar environment. This allows girls the comfort and safety to take risks, try new things, and freely discuss issues affecting them.

Girl-focused programs are effective in developing a girl’s confidence to build leadership skills and make important life choices. Program Presenters guide girls through team-building and cooperative activities designed to help them overcome obstacles, resolve conflict, and become leaders—together.

When you host Girl Scout programs, girls experience girl-led programming in a space they’re comfortable learning and growing in. Our program facilitators guide girls through team-building activities to help them overcome obstacles and resolve conflict, as well as give them space to explore their interests, discover new passions, and become leaders.

Programs we offer

Backpack Program (grades K-8) toggle arrow

A program that explores a variety of fun and interactive activities that include learning about Girl Scouts, building self-esteem/empowering girls, practicing empathy/kindness, experimenting with hands-on science projects, and getting outdoors. This program provides 5 packets that are designed to fit in a backpack.

World of STEM (grades K-8) toggle arrow

A program designed for girls to learn all about STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) and fun hands-on activities.

Money Wise (grades 3-8) toggle arrow

A program developed for girls to sharpen their financial literacy skills. They will work towards an understanding of needs versus wants, how to create a basic budget, how to set a financial goal, and all about saving, spending, and sharing.

Resilient, Ready, and Strong (grades K-8) toggle arrow

A program developed for girls to build their inner strength and resilience so that they are ready for anything! Scientists have found that certain activities may life your mood, calm you down when you're stressed, and help you face challenges—and you can do many of these activities at Girl Scouts.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long are the outreach programs? toggle arrow

Our programs are designed to be completed in approximately 5 hours. However, we can break the programs up into five one-hour sessions, two two-half hour sessions, one day for 5 hours.

How much does the program cost? toggle arrow

We are thrilled to be able to offer programs to community partners. As partners, we both recognize the need for developing girls of courage, confidence, and character in our world. Partnering with our community leaders to develop girls that will make the world a better place takes resources. The program includes the Girl Scout staff support, supplies and a Girl Scout membership (value of $50). Partnering organizations have the opportunity to offset the cost of the program for participating girls. Additional information will be shared by a member of the Community Engagement & Outreach Team during the scheduling of programming.

Do you offer programs to boys, too? toggle arrow

Part of the Girl Scout Experience is that the girls are in a girl-only, girl-led environment. Therefore, we do not offer our programs to boys. When working in a school, we ask that the school staff find a way to occupy the boy’s time.

Who teaches the programs? toggle arrow

Our program staff includes trained program presenters who will facilitate the program.

How are programs delivered? toggle arrow

Programs are delivered through three options that include:

1. Independent Programming– Activity packets provided for girls to complete on their own. This option is only available for the Backpack Program.

2. Supported Programming – Our staff train a community partner to deliver program content.

3. In-person Programming – Our staff facilitates program at location. (Dependent upon staffing capacity)

How do girls participate in Girl Scouts after the program has ended? toggle arrow

We provide the girls who participate in the program with a membership to Girl Scouts for the academic year in which they participate. Once they are Girl Scouts, they will be able to participate in all of the wonderful programs and activities Girl Scouts has to offer!
